Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Reds' luck returns to normal after game one..... Game 1: Gary Nolan got the monkey off his back (temporarily) and threw 7 strong innings as Cincy won by the score of 4-1. Clay Carroll was shaky in relief, allowing the tying run to come to the plate in the ninth, but Earl Williams was retired on a fly ball to end the game. The Reds scored 2 of their 4 runs in the first inning, and would proceed to score exactly 2 first-inning runs in all three games of the series. A nice lead to have, but only in game one would we manage not to choke that lead away. Game 2: A Tony Perez homer gave the Reds their customary 2-run first, but the Braves snatched a 3-2 lead after 6 innings. The Reds got a gift run (double, wild pitch, passed ball) to tie the game in the seventh, and it stayed that way until we choked up three consecutive walks in the tenth to force in the winning run. Game 3: Don Wilson was cruising and the Reds had built him a 3-0 lead, when Wilson fell apart and squandered it back to a 3-3 tie. No matter: Tony Perez immediately smacked another 2-run homer to make the score 5-3 in the seventh. But as we know all too well from the past four seasons, NOBODY chokes like the Reds choke: a 5-run Atlanta eighth keyed by a critical Joe Morgan error sealed the defeat. Alan |
