Subject: 1971 World Series
The series shifted back to Oakland with the Dodgers holding a 3 games to 2 lead. Game 6 had Al Downing facing Andy Messersmith. The A's scored a run in the bottom of the 1st and, after the Dodgers tied it in the 3rd, added 2 more in the bottom half of the inning on a Mike Epstein homerun. The Dodgers scored in the 6th just to see the A's match it with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame. The A's took the 4-2 lead into the 9th and brought in Bob Miller to shut the door after a lead off walk. After Richie Allen hit into a force out, the Dodgers knocked out 3 straight singles to tie the game and put the go ahead run on 3rd with 1 out. Fred Stanley thenlofted a flyball to rightfield where Reggie Jackson made the catch and threw out DIck Dietz to end the inn After an exciting 6 games the last one was anti-climatic. The A's struck first and struck often. Two in the 2nd, another in the 3rd and the death blow of 3 runs in the 5th gave the A's a commanding 6-0 lead. The Dodgers tried to climb back into the game but, every time they threatened the A's would turn a double play or Blue or Bob Locker would get a key strikeout. The Dodgers only could muster one run off of Blue and the A's took the 1971Smiley World Series 4 games to 3 (including coming back from a 3 game to 1 defecit). The Dodgers really had no business even getting to the 7th game. They only hit .199 for the series with 1 homerun (Doug Raders solo shot in the 1st inning of Game 1). The pitchers deserved the credit getting the Dodgers as far as they did as they held the A's to a .238 average. But the A's pitchers were just dominating posting a 1.90 ERA (compared to the Dodgers 2.88 era). Reggie Jackson could get some consideration for series MVP (2 HR's 7 RBI's) but he only hit .241 for the series. Mike Epstein had a case for it as well (.346 avg, 2 HR's 4 RBI's) but it was his costly error in the 9th inning of Game 4 almost lost the series for Oakland. But this was a series where pitching dominated and Vida Blue was the most dominating of pitchers. 2 wins, 0 losses, 0.75 ERA and 28 K's in 24 innings was too much to ignore so he would be my choice for MVP...
