Cincy's Week 4 schedule is a repeat of Week 1: knowing that those pesky Giants always seem to do so well in Riverfront, the Reds needed another decent showing in Chavez Ravine.  Three of these four games were decided by one run (the other, by two runs), so either team could have won or lost them all.  The L.A. defense has been suspect all year long, but they sucked it up and performed quite nicely against the Reds (L.A. converted 74% of x-plays in the series).

Game 1: Tom Seaver & Don Sutton both pitched well, Seaver getting slightly the better of it (a 2-hitter with 10 Ks).  The Reds played Strand-O-Matic all series long, or the games would never have been close (39 LOB to 22 for the home team).  Neither team scored after the third inning on this day, Cincy prevailing by the score of 2-1 (it took 25 games for the Reds to get their FIRST one-run victory of 1972).  Joe Morgan drove in both of the runs with a double.

Game 2: L.A. took a 3-0 lead after two, but Cincy came back to tie the game in the seventh.  We went into extras; as an aside, it should be noted that the 1972 Reds have so far committed very few errors - but each and every one is perfectly timed to be a real killer.  And so it was in the tenth when Tony Perez booted yet another one, the Dodgers naturally converting the miscue into a game-winning unearned run.  Today's LOB report: CIN - 11, LAN - 5.  Nineteen of the 21 hits in the game were singles.

Game 3: The Dodgers outhit the Reds 11-8, but we still managed to outstrand them.  Fortunately for once, L.A. was no better at plating runners than Reds, and the visitors held on for a 3-1 win.  Willie Crawford lined out with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the 8th and a run already in against Clay Carroll, and Carroll retired the side in order in the 9th.  Cincy turned 3 DPs on the day, and Perez atoned for his critical game 2 gaffe by launching his 6th home run of the season.  Entering the week, Perez was batting .400 lately (22 for 55) after a pathetic 1 for 25 start to the season.

Game 4: This was a matchup of two no-luck-at-all pitchers: Don Sutton, fresh as a daisy after only *TWO* days rest somehow, and Gary Nolan (no amount of rest helps him).  Two pitchers with brilliant cards and nothing to show for it so far in 1972 except atrociously-high ERAs.  Both hurlers threw surprisingly-effective games, and once again the Dodgers outhit the Reds but didn't come out on top.  Cincy took a 2-0 lead into the ninth and came out with a 2-1 win.  L.A. collected 3 singles and a walk in the final frame, but parlayed it into only 1 run thanks to a key Willie Davis GIDP in the midst of it.  There were only 10 hits in the game (9 singles).
