Subject: Reds @ Expos
Cincy struggles mightily with the Expos in a series where either team could have won at least 3, maybe 4. The Reds' supposedly-great pitching was not very apparent during these 4 games. Game 1: Montreal takes an 8-2 lead before Cincy finally comes to life in the late innings and makes it close (8-5). Rich Hand and two relievers "held" the Reds to 10 hits and 7 walks, but 11 LOB combined with some atypically lousy pitching by lefties Ross Grimsley and Don Gullett put the game too far out of reach. The Expos would get a total of one more at-bat vs. a lefty in the series. Game 2: The score was tied at two after 3 innings, and neither team would score again until the 11th. Don Wilson (7 baserunners in 8.1 IP) and Ernie McAnally (9 runners in 10 IP) both pitched well, but a two-out single by Tony Perez in the 11th plated Bobby Tolan and made a winner out of reliever Jack Billingham; Mike Marshall took the loss. Game 3: A 4-0 lead after six.... erased by a 6 run choke..... but it WASN'T the Reds choking!!!! Balor Moore had a no-hitter and had faced only 1 batter over the minimum heading into the sixth. Meanwhile, the Reds' scrub starter (Tom Seaver) couldn't purchase a break during his 5 horrible innings of work. Rich McKinney batted for Seaver leading off the sixth, and singled for Cincy's first hit of the game. Pete Rose doubled him to third, but no further. In the seventh, all hell broke loose for the Expos: Art Kusnyer, who had been hosed badly on a pair of split cards earlier in the game, finally got a good one and singled in a pair of runs with one out. Pinch-hitter Jerry Grote tripled Kusnyer home and 4 of the next 5 batters also got hits. Six runs scored in all, and the 4-0 deficit became a very unlikely 6-4 win. Lefty Steve Barber got the final out for his 5th save. Game 4: Cincy outhit the home team 12-7 and benefited from a pair of unearned runs, but it took another big late-inning rally to get the W. The score was 2-2 after 7 innings, when the Reds put 5 on the board in the 8th, Joe Morgan's two-out, two-run single capping the scoring for the Reds. Tom Hall threw 3 scoreless innings of middle relief in his N.L. debut, before Jack Billingham came in for the 9th inning and allowed the score to become close (7-4 final) by once again walking everyone in sight when he wasn't busy allowing hits.
