He lofted a three-run bomb in the 1st inning, stroked a base-hit resulting
in a run in the 3rd inning, blasted a solo shot in the 5th inning and lofted
a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 10th of the season) in the 7th inning.  Overall

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park today,' Banks said.  'I'm
glad I decided to play!'

Glenn Beckert lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Chicago
NL Cubs defeated the New York NL Mets 8 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

New York NL never recovered after Chicago NL took the lead in the bottom of
the 7th inning scoring one runner.  After two outs Billy Williams hit a
bases-empty home run (his 8th of the season).  Chicago NL out-hit New York NL
for the game, 13 hits to 10.

Jerry Stephenson(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Danny Frisella(1-1) was given the loss in relief.  With this win, Chicago NL
has a 21-16 record.  They have been 7-3 lately.  New York NL can't seem to
snap out of their recent 'funk'.  Now they have a miserable 1-9 record over
the last couple weeks.

Ray Culp allowed Alan Boodman to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at
Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs won in their last at-bat beating the New
York NL Mets by the count of 3 to 2.

The game was decided in the 9th inning.  After an out was recorded, Randy
Hundley lined a base-hit.  Don Kessinger followed and he lined a one-base
hit.  Ted Savage then drew a walk to load the bases.  Glenn Beckert came up
and he laced a single making Chicago NL victorious to the delight of the the
home town crowd.  Chicago NL had 12 hits for the afternoon.

Culp(3-1), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Dick
Selma(1-1) was given the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in
1 and 1/3 innings.

Chicago NL now has a record of 22-17.  Steve Dewing was unhappy with his
club's recent performance.  'We can't keep losing games' he said.  'It gets
to be embarrassing after a while.'
