Subject: Cubs @ Giants

Our luck is probably going to run out in a matter of seconds, but for now the Cubs are hanging in there in the N.L. pennant race.  Although this series was only a split, featuring good pitching (as would be expected from these two teams) it was only a short distance away from being a Cubbie sweep....

Game 1: Stan Williams & Milt Pappas battled on even terms and the score was 1-1 after 8 innings.  Hobie Landrith then came through with a 2-out, 2-run double off of a fading Pappas to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.  Chris Short retired all three SFN lefties he faced in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory as Williams' record now goes to 5-0.

Game 2: Another great pitching duel, this one between Sam Jones and Seth (who?) Morehead.  Cubs outfielder Gus Bell missed a solo homer by one thin split card in the 5th, and the game remained scoreless until Willie Mays *didn't* miss his chance at a homer in the SFN 8th.  Final score: 1-0.

Game 3: Finally the offenses showed up, for one day anyway.  The Cubs batted around in the 1st inning against V.B. Mizell, banging out 6 hits.  After one full inning, the hit count stood at 6-1 but the score was much closer, 4-2.  Knowing it was only a matter a time before the Cubs choke was complete, we tried something different - getting it out of the way early.

Dick Ellsworth obligingly delivered a 2-out Grand Slam almost immediately, making the score 6-4 SFN after 2 innings.  The Cubs cut the Giants lead to 6-5 in the 4th, then tacked on 6 runs after the sixth inning to prevail by the score of 11-6.  Apparently confused by the unusual timing of the inevitable CHN choke, San Francisco managed no runs and just 2 hits in the final 7 frames.

Game 4: With a chance to win this important series outright, the Cubs reverted to nearly an exact replay of game 2.  One solo SFN homer was the entire scoring in yet another 1-0 defeat.  Chuck Estrada pitched well for a change, but his luck hasn't improved, as he took the tough loss.  Mike McCormick tossed 8 solid innings to allow the Giants to salvage a very fortunate split.
