MAY 22 What a day for the Chicago NL Cubs! They shellacked the New York AL Yankees pitching for 9 runs while Chris Short(2-4), with relief help from Bobby Locke, held New York AL to 1 run. Chicago NL tallied 5 runs in the 6th inning with the help of 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Gus Bell who made the crowd happy when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Chicago NL out-hit New York AL for the game, 10 hits to 4. Locke recorded the save, his 3rd. Ralph Terry(5-3) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings. The score was tied at 3 after nine. New York AL won the game in the 11th inning. Bill Skowron led off and started the rally when he slapped a single. After an out was recorded, Tony Kubek came to the plate and banged out a single. Ed Bouchee then reached on an error resulting in a run. Gil McDougald came up and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Overall New York AL out-hit Chicago NL 11 to 8. Jim Coates(5-3) allowed 1 run in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
