Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds get no help from our buddy in southern California, and drift a little further towards third place by splitting 4 games with the Padres.  Despite their sub-.500 record, the Pads have played teams very tough at home throughout 1972, and sport an 11-game Road Field DISAdvantage, easily the best differential in the majors (only the Tigers and Rangers are currently within shouting distance of that mark).

Game 1: Ross Grimsley pitched an excellent game, but San Diego ace Gaylord Perry didn't disappoint the home crowd in his 1-0 victory.  Perry held the Reds to 3 hits (the Padres managed only 5 themselves).  The lone run scored in the sixth when, after two outs and the bases empty, San Diego bunched 3 of their 5 hits together with Dave Roberts doubling home Nate Colbert to seal the Reds' fate.

Game 2: The Reds jammed pretty much all of our breaks into this lone game: an 11-0 drubbing of Milt Pappas.  Don Wilson limped his way to the shutout despite allowing 12 Padres to reach base.  The score was only 1-0 heading to the sixth, when Padre Killer Bob Burda (EIGHT of his 13 career homers have come against San Diego) smacked his first of two round-trippers on this day.  A five-run ninth made the game appear to have been a laugher the whole way.

Game 3: Tom Seaver and Clay Kirby were evenly matched in a close game that the Reds ended up barely taking by the score of 5-3.  Cincy broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th on a Joe Morgan RBI single, and Ron Clark's leadoff homer in the ninth appeared to be unnecessary (as did the other ninth-inning run the Reds tallied).  But ace reliever Steve Barber walked in an unearned run for the Padres in the bottom of the ninth, and Clay Carroll needed to fan Nate Colbert with the bases loaded and two outs, or it would have been just one more Big Choke for the team who excels so well at them, a fact we proved for the umpteenth time in.....

Game 4: Looking to take the series 3 games to 1 and stay close to the red-hot Giants for one more week, the Reds FINALLY manage to pull off that patented Late-Inning Choke and turn a 2-0 lead in the seventh into a 3-2 loss.  Gary Nolan allowed only 1 earned run in 7 innings, but it was the unearned run he allowed that was especially costly.  Pedro Borbon failed to retire a batter in the San Diego ninth, three straight singles plating the winning run.

Alan
