AUGUST 3

The New York AL Yankees came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans.  The final score,, was 3 to
1.

New York AL scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs using 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Yogi Berra got things going
when he slapped a base-hit.  Hank Bauer got his turn next, but he was a
strikeout victim.  Bobby Richardson then laced a one-base hit.  Gil McDougald
came up and he drew a walk to load the bases.  Bob Grim then threw a wild
pitch bringing in two baserunners.  Albie Pearson joined his teammates in the
uprising and hit a single scoring the final run of the inning.  New York AL
had 6 hits overall, while St. Louis had 2.

The victory was credited to Ryne Duren(4-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Bobby Shantz earned his 12th save.  Larry Jackson(8-16) suffered the
loss.

'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Jackson said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done.  Our fans deserve better than this.'
