GAME ONE At Memorial Stadium the Baltimore Orioles easily handled the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8 to 4. Freehan was a one-man wrecking crew. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 5th inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 12th of the season) in the 6th inning. Detroit kept the scorekeepers busy in the 1st inning with 4 runs on 5 hits and the 4th inning scoring 5 runs. Detroit dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. Johnny Podres(2-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Tom Phoebus(6-2) was the loser. He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings. 'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Freehan said 'next time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
