game one Braves..........5 Mets............ 2 C.Upshaw WIN(1-1) C.Raymond SAVE(7th) C.Koonce LOSS(0-3) HOME RUNS- H.Aaron(11th) STOLEN BASES- B.Harrelson(7th) Hank Aaron slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Shea Stadium as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York NL Mets in 13 innings 5 to 2. The score was tied at 2 after nine. Atlanta won it in the 13th inning. Bob Uecker led off and started the rally when he doubled. Bill White stepped up to the plate and he delivered a one-base hit. Woody Woodward struck out, unable to help the rally. Tito Francona came up and he hit a deep fly plating a run. Aaron stepped into the box and doubled scoring another run. Mack Jones added to the outburst and drew a walk. Joe Torre was next and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Atlanta and New York NL each finished the night with 11 hits. Cecil Upshaw(1-1) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Claude Raymond earned the save, his 7th. Cal Koonce(0-3) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
game two Braves..........5 Mets............ 4 D.Kelley WIN(3-1) C.Upshaw SAVE(2nd) B.Kelso LOSS(0-1) HOME RUNS- M.Jones(7th), T.Davis(6th) STOLEN BASES- C.Boyer(1st), B.Knoop(1st) In an great finish the Atlanta Braves came back in the top of the ninth and held on to win over the New York NL Mets by a score of 5 to 4 at Shea Stadium. Atlanta came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Mack Jones who quieted the crowd when he quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 7th of the season). Atlanta and New York NL each finished the night with 9 hits. Dick Kelley(3-1) allowed 1 run in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Cecil Upshaw earned his 2nd save. Bill Kelso(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. Steve Dewing was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about thegame had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us tonight'
game three Braves..........2 Mets............ 3 J.Ritchie LOSS(0-2) J.Bunning WIN(6-4) HOME RUNS- B.White(5th) Jim Bunning pitched 9 strong innings as the New York NL Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves by a score of3 to 2 at Shea Stadium. New York NL jumped on top of Atlanta in the bottom of the 7th inning scoring one runner utilizing 2 base hits. Jerry Buchek hit a single. Jerry Grote came next and he reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Cleon Jones came to the plate and delivered a one-base hit scoring the run. The Atlanta batters went down meekly in the 9th. Bunning(6-4) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Jay Ritchie(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. 'He came out with good stuff,' Steve Dewing said about Bunning. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.' |
