Subject: Reds @ Padres
After the Reds improved their league-best Home record by sweeping the Braves, we got greedy and were thinking "sweep" on the road against the Padres. Well, THAT sure didn't happen....... Game 1: If it's Crunch Time, then it must be time to prove once again that NOBODY chokes like the Reds choke. Here's example #13609: Cincy was up 4-0 (after half an inning), 5-2, 7-4 (in the 8th), but pulled off yet another massive strangulation. The Reds' Arson Squad permitted a pair of runs to the Pads in the 8th, making the score 7-6. Pedro Borbon came in with two runners on and 1 out in the ninth, walked the bases loaded, allowed a sac bunt to tie the game, then permitted a grand slam to Dave Roberts to decisively terminate the contest. Game 2: This seemingly mismatched set of pitchers (Tom Seaver, Mike Corkins) waged a scoreless battle through 6 innings, but the Reds were able to score 4 late runs, and Seaver finished with a 3-hit shutout. Game 3: Another alleged mismatch on the mound (Gary Nolan vs. Ron "No Luck" Reed). Reed does have one of his 4 wins this year against the Reds, and almost made it two today. Reed was up 2-1 in the fifth when San Diego catcher Ellie Rodriguez simply disintegrated: with 2 outs and nobody on, he committed a 2-base error on a CATCH-X. After Bobby Tolan doubled home the runner to tie the game, TWO consecutive pitches got through to the backstop (one was charitably scored a wild pitch), and the go-ahead run crossed the plate. Cincy would later tack on 7 more runs and win 10-2, but it was close there for a while. Game 4: Gaylord Perry (19-8 coming into the game; 4-0 vs. CIN) took the mound for game 4, so all sensible Reds fans had to be thinking "Here comes another split" and they weren't wrong. Five Cincy hits in the first two innings led to pretty much nothing other than 4 LOB, the lone clutch hit being Don Gullett's RBI single. That scrawny lead evaporated immediately when the Pads laced 4 singles together in the third, good for two runs and the ballgame. The only further scoring was a Willie Mays homer leading off the 8th. Perry wound up with a 7-hitter and walked nobody during his 20th win of 1972. Alan |
