Subject: Reds @ Dodgers
Two teams see their disappointing 1972 seasons come to an end, but one of them can rest easy over the break, reasonably secure in the knowledge that 1973 is their "turn" to win the NL West. Game 1: The Reds allow 3 unearned runs but get a pair back and win 4-3. Tom Seaver gives up 6 runners and 0 ER in 6 IP, but settles for a no decision. The winning run scored in the ninth when the Reds turned 4 consecutive hits into one run and two runners gunned down. Game 2: Most of the scoring was done early in this 4-1 Cincinnati win. Don Sutton was deprived of win #24, but still narrowly leads the N.L. Cy Young race for the moment; all will depend on Bob Gibson's last start of 1972. Game 3: Cincy again permitted zero earned runs, in a 6-2 victory. Lou Piniella had 3 hits including a double and a home run. Game 4: In a massive effort to avoid the sweep, Cincy started 8 scrubs (and Lou Piniella) on the way to a 4-2 loss (despite outhitting the Dodgers 10-7, and because of out-LOBing them 11-5). Pedro Borbon started and went 3 innings and took the loss despite allowing the requisite zero earned runs. Willie McCovey and Tom Egan went deep for the home team, and Pete Rose kept his consecutive games streak alive (at 810) by pinch-hitting in the seventh (only one other player has never missed a game so far).
