april 10 Dick Groat had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers topped the New York AL Yankees by a score of 8 to 5 at Briggs Stadium. Detroit took the lead off Vinegar Bend Mizell in the first inning when they scored 3 runs on 5 hits. The highlight belonged to Groat who made the crowd happy when he hit a single bringing in two baserunners. Detroit rapped out 12 hits for the night. Frank Lary(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Lary got relief help from Larry Sherry who gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Mizell(0-1). He was unable to control the Detroit offense and allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
