Dick Groat had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers topped the New York
AL Yankees by a score of 8 to 5 at Briggs Stadium.

Detroit took the lead off Vinegar Bend Mizell in the first inning when they
scored 3 runs on 5 hits.  The highlight belonged to Groat who made the crowd
happy when he hit a single bringing in two baserunners.  Detroit rapped out
12 hits for the night.

Frank Lary(1-0) allowed 4 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Lary
got relief help from Larry Sherry who gained credit for his 2nd save.  The
loss was charged to Mizell(0-1).  He was unable to control the Detroit
offense and allowed 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

One run was the difference at Briggs Stadium as the New York ALYankees ended
a long winless drought and defeated the Detroit Tigers 10 to 9.

New York AL brought 5 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning when
they had 6 base hits.  The highlight belonged to Hank Bauer who deflated the
mood of the partisan fans when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 3rd of
the season).  Despite losing, Detroit out-hit New York AL 17 to 11.

Tom Sturdivant(1-0) allowed 1 run in 4 innings, and picked up the victory.
Ryne Duren earned his 3rd save.  Tom Morgan(1-1) was hit with the loss in
relief.
