may 26 Sam McDowell completed the game without help from the bullpen and third baseman Charley Smith went deep and scored 3 times as the New York AL Yankees outscored the slumping Chicago NL Cubs 9 to 2. New York AL took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Smith got things rolling when he drew a walk. McDowell followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Horace Clarke then doubled scoring a run. Ruben Amaro came up and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. New York AL rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon. McDowell(2-4) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Joe Niekro(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 6 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings. New York AL drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Clarke doubled. Larry Brown came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Steve Whitaker came to the plate and stroked a base-hit scoring the run. That early run support was enough for Al Downing(1-7) and New York AL. Chicago NL threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Downing was helped out by Dooley Womack who recorded his 5th save. Bill Hands(2-4) took the loss. He gave up only 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
