July 14 Whitey Ford whitewashed San Francisco on 3 hits and Mickey Mantle had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the New York AL Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 8 to 0 at Seals Stadium. Ford(9-7) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the San Francisco batters. He allowed just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 4.09 to 3.85. New York AL managed 10 in their victory. The losing pitcher was Mike McCormick(12-8). He pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 walks. The score was tied at 1 after nine. San Francisco won it in the 10th inning. Bob Nieman drew a walk. Smoky Burgess stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Don Demeter dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Jerry Lumpe stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases. Willie McCovey came to the plate and stroked a one-base hit making San Francisco the winners and sending the 48,152 fans home happy. San Francisco finished with just 4 hits in the victory. Antonelli(14-5) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Ryne Duren(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit in 1 and 1/3 innings. Antonelli was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the victory and I'll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!'
