July 17 Leon Wagner ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the New York AL Yankees beat the ice-cold Washington Senators by the count of 8 to 3. Wagner led the offense for New York AL. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 5th inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the season) in the 7th inning. New York AL out-hit Washington for the game, 12 hits to 6. Bob Turley(5-6) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Turley got help from Don Larsen who was credited with his 3rd save. Gary Bell(6-12) suffered the loss. He gave up 7 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA jump from 3.12 to 3.38. New York AL won the game in the 13th inning. Billy Klaus kicked off the action when he lined a single. Gil McDougald was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Elston Howard came to the plate and was walked intentionally. Mickey Mantle was up next and he drew a walk to load the bases. Bill Skowron stepped into the box and laced a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners. Skowron took second on the throw. Both teams ended up with 12 on the night.
