August 7 Second baseman Bobby Richardson had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the New York AL Yankees topped the lifeless Baltimore Orioles by a score of 7 to 4 at Memorial Stadium. In the 7th inning New York AL scored 5 runs when they had 6 base hits. The highlight belonged to Richardson who quieted the crowd when he tripled clearing the bases. Baltimore went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. The victory was credited to Vinegar Bend Mizell(11-7) who went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs. Ryne Duren recorded his 25th save. Bob Shaw(9-14) was hit with the loss. The New York AL ballclub's record now stands at 70-57. With the loss Baltimore now has a record of 39-88, worst in the division. The New York AL Yankees won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. New York AL came up with all the runs they needed in the 2nd inning as they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Baltimore threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. The win was credited to Bob Turley(6-8) who went 7 innings allowing 1 run. Ryne Duren gained credit for his 26th save. The losing pitcher was Jerry Walker(9-16). Baltimore's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!' His team allowed 9 runs while Ralph Terry(9-10), with relief help from Bobby Shantz, held Baltimore to 1 run in a laugher. Bill Skowron enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 9th of the season) in the 5th inning and tripled scoring a run in the 9th inning. New York AL simply wore out the Baltimore pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings. Mudcat Grant(4-14) was charged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work.
