august 24 First baseman Bill Skowron slammed 2 homeruns as the New York AL Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11 to 4 at Briggs Stadium. Skowron enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning and blasted a two-run home run (his 12th of the season) in the 8th inning. New York AL had 16 hits overall, while Detroit had 10. The win went to Vinegar Bend Mizell(12-7) who allowed 4 runs in 6 innings. Don Larsen got the save, his 4th. Don Mossi(13-14) was given the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 6 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. Lemon was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam home run in the 1st inning, laced a single in the 5th inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 8th inning and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 35th of the season) in the 8th inning. Detroit had a total of 10 hits for the game. The win was credited to Frank Lary(14-9) who went 8 innings allowing 5 runs. Ryne Duren(1-3) was given the loss in relief. 'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there and being prepared,' Lemon said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.' The New York AL Yankees won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. New York AL scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Elston Howard laced a base-knock. Tony Kubek came next and he delivered a base-hit. Kubek took second on the throw. Norm Siebern then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Billy Klaus was up next and he hit a deep fly scoring the run. New York AL totaled 7 on the night. Jim Coates(5-5) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory.
