Jim Lemon ripped 3 homeruns at Briggs Stadium where the DetroitTigers beat
the New York AL Yankees by the score of 12 to 5.

Lemon was spectacular at the plate.  The hometown fans showed their
appreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat.  He electrified
the crowd with a Grand Slam home run in the 1st inning, laced a single in the
5th inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 8th inning and emptied the bases
with a Grand Slam homerun (his 35th of the season) in the 8th inning.
Detroit had a total of 10 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Frank Lary(14-9) who went 8 innings allowing 5 runs.
Ryne Duren(1-3) was given the loss in relief.  'It's just about getting in a
good hitting position and just going out there and being prepared,' Lemon
said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and not do too much. I just try to
have a good approach, day after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'

49,861 fans were treated to a fine game at Briggs Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The New York AL Yankees won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

New York AL scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  After an out was
recorded, Elston Howard laced a base-knock.  Tony Kubek came next and he
delivered a base-hit.  Kubek took second on the throw.  Norm Siebern then was
walked intentionally to load the bases.  Billy Klaus was up next and he hit a
deep fly scoring the run.  New York AL totaled 7 on the night.

Jim Coates(5-5) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Coates
got relief help from Ryne Duren who gained credit for his 27th save.  Tom
Morgan(6-6) was the loser in relief.

With this win, New York AL has a division leading 81-63 record.  They have
been 7-3 lately.  With this loss, Detroit has a 6-4 record of late, 79-65
