Subject: 1959 World Series is underway

(By mutual agreement, the series is being played by the road manager.)

There is no lead so large that the Chicago Cubs cannot choke on it, as we once again tried - but fortunately failed - to prove in game 1 of the 1959 World Series, nearly wasting a record-setting performance in the process....

NYA starter Whitey Ford got into - and out of - immediate trouble in the CHN first: the Cubs loaded the bases with only one out, but Ford fanned Pinson & Francona to terminate the threat.  The Yanks got 2 runners into scoring position with one out in their 2nd, but Pascual showed that he could be as tough as Whitey.

CHN left fielder Lee Walls led off with a home run in the CHN 3rd, but the Cubs gave the lead right back when Yogi Berra doubled home Billy Klaus with 2 outs in the NYA 3rd.

Luckily for Chicago, Lee Walls was just getting warmed up.

Walls delivered another HR in CHN's 4-run 5th, then keyed a 6-run 6th with yet another homer, all on rolls of 1-5 and all with fortuitous split cards.  Harry Chiti capped the rally by narrowly missing a split card chance at a Grand Slam, settling for a double.

Walls hit a slump in the 7th, rolling a 1-6 and setting for a mere double.

A pair of errors in the 9th gave the visitors a 12-2 lead, and even the Cubs couldn't possibly blow one THAT large, could they?

No, not this time, but it sure wasn't for lack of effort.  Pascual was opened up for surgery, as the Yankees led off their 9th with a walk, single, gopher, double, gopher, and in the blink of an eye that 12-2 lead was 12-7.  Don Elston finally arrived from the bullpen, and although everyone hit the ball hard off him, nobody got a hit and the game ended without further damage.

Game 2 to follow....

Lee Walls smashed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored
the New York AL Yankees 12 to 7.

Walls was unconscious all day.  The New York AL fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He banged
out a single in the 1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the
3rd inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 5th inning, rifled a
three-run blast (his 3rd of the season) in the 6th inning and doubled in the
7th inning.  Chicago NL had 17 hits for the game and New York AL had 9.

The winning pitcher was Camilo Pascual(1-0) who allowed 7 runs in 8 innings.
Whitey Ford(0-1) was given the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of
work.

Walls was jubilant after the game 'Let me see a box-score' he joked, 'I want
to see how that game looks on paper.'
