Facing a right-handed starter, new superstar Lee Walls found himself on the bench today but his mates did (barely) well enough without him.... Dave Hillman was opposed by Art Ditmar, and unlike game 1 both starters registered performances that they don't need to be ashamed of. The Yankees took their first lead of the series in the 2nd inning when Norm Siebern led off with a home run. Bill Skowron followed with a grounder to Al Dark, who tossed the ball into the stands but Skowron was stranded at second base. Vada Pinson hammered a bases-empty 2-out triple in the CHN 3rd, but he too was stranded. NYA began a rally in their 4th with consecutive singles, but pitcher Ditmar (batting 7th?) rapped into a 4-6-3 DP. The Cubs took the lead, and completed the scoring for the day, with a pair of runs in the fifth. The first run scored on Pinson's sac fly, deep enough that there was no play at the plate. The final run came when Ernie Banks followed Pinson's flyout with an RBI single. Only one runner for either side got as far as second base after that. CHN reliever Elmer Singleton took the mound after Hillman issued a free pass to Mickey Mantle with 2 outs in the 8th, and retired the side without officially facing a batter when Chiti gunned down trying Mantle trying to steal on Singleton's first pitch. Hank Bauer drew a walk with one out in the NYA 9th, but Siebern popped out and Skowron hit an x-grounder to Singleton. The e34 pitcher bobbled it a few times but finally found the handle and threw Skowron out to end the contest.
