The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the New York NL Mets at Shea Stadium by the score
of 3 to 2.

Pittsburgh went ahead for good in the 5th inning scoring a single run.
Pittsburgh had just 4 hits for the night. 

The winning pitcher was Jim Rooker(4-0) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings.
Rooker got help from Dave Giusti who earned his 10th save.  The loss was
charged to Jim Bibby(3-5).  He surrendered 4 hits and 6 walks in 7 innings.

Cleon Jones had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the New York NL Mets defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 2 at Shea Stadium.

New York NL wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring a
single run using 2 hits.  New York NL and Pittsburgh each finished the night
with 6 hits. 

Steve Stone(2-4) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Tom Hilgendorf got
the save, his 2nd.  Luke Walker(3-4) was tagged with the loss.  He pitched 4

Jerry Koosman blanked Pittsburgh allowing just 1 hit and George Theodore had 2
base hits as the New York NL Mets outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 1 to
0.

Koosman(6-2) dominated Pittsburgh hitters.  He didn't allow much, just 1 hit
and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.21.  Pittsburgh went down
quietly in the 9th. 

The losing pitcher was Ken Brett(2-7).  He gave up 1 run and 6 hits in 7
innings.  The New York NL ballclub's record now stands at 20-18.  With the
loss Pittsburgh now has a record of 22-19.

Willie Stargell ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Shea Stadium where the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York NL Mets by the score of 15 to
6.

Stargell enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He cracked a solo homerun in the
6th inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 11th of the
season) in the 7th inning.  Pittsburgh kept the scorekeepers busy in the 5th
inning with 5 runs on 4 hits.  Overall Pittsburgh out-hit New York NL 18 to
13. 

Dock Ellis(6-3) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Jon Matlack(4-1)
suffered the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 2 walks in 4
innings.
