In a close game it was the Pittsburgh Pirates 3, the San Diego Padres 1 in 11
innings at San Diego Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings.  Pittsburgh ended up
winning it in the 11th inning.  Dave Cash opened up the inning nicely when he
reached on an error.  Freddie Patek came to the plate and laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  Al Oliver then cracked a two-run shot (his 9th of the
season).  Pittsburgh had a total of 7 hits for the game.  

Dave Giusti(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Mike
Corkins(2-2) ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered no hits and no
walks in 1/3 of an inning.

Willie Stargell ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at San Diego Stadium where the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 9 to 6.

Stargell enjoyed a fine day at the plate.  He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run in the 1st inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 14th
of the season) in the 6th inning.  Pittsburgh finished with 12 hits in the
victory.  

The win was credited to Jim Rooker(5-0) who went 6 innings allowing 3 runs.
Dave Giusti earned the save, his 11th.  Gaylord Perry(3-7) ended up with the
loss.  He surrendered 6 runs and 5 hits without retiring a batter.

Pittsburgh now has a record of a division leading 25-19.  With this loss, San
Diego has a 5-5 record of late, 17-27, worst in the division overall.

San Diego Stadium.

San Diego scored 5 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 5 hits.  The key
at-bat was by Don Hahn who made the crowd happy when he doubled plating two
runs.  It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 6 times.
