Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Interleague play revisited
Hi Guys My vote is for Option 3 ( the limited inter-league play). My 2nd vote would be Option # 1 (playing teams in your division more). I will repost what I wrote a few months ago on the subject for the benifit of new managers. I just wanted to check in with my .02 on the interleague issue. I voted for interleague play for the following main reasons. I don't know if any of you have played in Strat leagues that do not have interleague play, but in my experiences, the league tends to develop into 2 separate leagues. With hardly any contact between members of opposite leagues the tendency is to not follow much of the other league. When looking to deal you usually talk to the guys you are in more contact with. In my Strat leagues I like to have the full league experience with everyone. At least this is what I have observed in the two leagues I was in that didn't have interleague play. Part of the reason why I joined Smiley was to re-live my memories from my youth. Growing up watching the Carl Yastremski's, Johnny Bench's and the Willie Stargell's of the baseball world. Now I would get to see them play again in Smiley. But without inter-league play you miss out on the superstars of the other league that never changed teams or just stayed in the other league. Yes maybe I will see Yaz if he is traded to a National League team but I sure wouldn't expect it. Same with Johnny Bench or Willie Stargell for you American leaguers. You might see a Joe Morgan late in his career but not in his prime. Yes, there wasn't interleague play back then but I am more interested in seeing all the players and remembering the memories, not trying to recreate the exact structure of the major leagues. I certainly agree with limiting interleague play to just a few games and think 30 out of 162 is a great ratio. If keeping the exact schedule then we will get to see every opposite league team in your stadium every other season (one calendar year). Anyways, just my .02 on the topic. Scott In a message dated 10/19/00 4:40:36 PM Pacific Daylight Time, mtomeo@... writes: << I know we voted on this earlier but I want to take another poll to see what managers really want.. 2 reasons for this: 1. First vote was close (8-7 against if I remember correctly) 2. We have had some turnover in the managerial ranks as well as adding new managers for the expansion next year. This way I have a vote of all current managers. There are 3 options to vote for.... Please rank them from 1-3 as to your preference. Low score will be the option chosen. Remember we will have 4 five team divisions next season. Option 1. No interleague play. YOu play teams in your division 23 times (92 games) and the other division 14 times (70 games) Option 2: No interleague play. YOu play everyone in your league 18 times. (balanced schedule) Option 3: Interleague play. Play one division 3 games each (15 games) and alternate years. Remaining games will be 18 in division (72 games) and 15 against the other division (75 games). One argument made for interleague play was the opportunity to "play" against the other league and see all players. Keep in mind, you will only see 1/2 the teams each year, and depending on scheduling, may not actually play against a team . If you want to see how your team stacks up against the cards/tigers of 68 ( plug in team and year of your choice), you can always play an unscheduled game between the teams. The options are in my order of preference. I like the unbalanced schedule so that division play actually means something. Also each team does get one expansion team so no established team gets a bigger break than any other one. THe one drawback is with 5 teams per division there cannot be in division play only at the end of the season. You can post your votes either to smileylist as a whole or to me individually. No big rush as I don't have a break from school for a while but I would like to get the scheduling done early. Thanks Mike co-commish
