Center fielder Gino Cimoli blasted a grand slam and Arnie Portocarrero held
New York AL to 3 hits as the New York AL Yankees were badly beaten by the
Baltimore Orioles, 11 to 1.

Cimoli enjoyed a big evening at the plate.  He laced a base-knock in the 6th
inning and brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer (his
1st of the season) in the 7th inning.  Baltimore totaled 16 on the night.

Portocarrero(2-0) allowed 1 run on the game. The loss was charged to Vinegar
Bend Mizell(0-2).  The win by Baltimore is a very welcome one as they have
been struggling in recent days.  Their record now stands at 6-9 - only 1-9 in
their last ten games.  Still in a bad slump, with this loss, New York AL is
0-10 lately and 9-6 on the year.

The New York AL Yankees ended a long winless drought and edged the Baltimore
Orioles at Memorial Stadium by the score of 6 to 5.

New York AL wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 2
runners on 4 hits.  Baltimore was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

The victory went to Bob Grim(1-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 5 runs. Ryne
Duren recorded his 4th save.  The losing pitcher was Mudcat Grant(1-2).  He
was unable to control the New York AL offense and allowed 10 hits and 4 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed.  Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted New York AL's manager.  'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins
together and turn things around!'

Shortstop Luis Aparicio had 2 base hits at Memorial Stadium where the
Baltimore Orioles beat the New York AL Yankees in 12 innings by the score of
5 to 4.

The score was tied at 3 after nine.  Baltimore won the game in the 12th
inning.  George Crowe started the inning off right when he drew a walk.  Gus
Triandos next to the plate and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run
(his 5th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Baltimore and a
raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  New York AL had 12 hits
in the game while Baltimore had 8, but Baltimore had the more timely hits.

The victory was credited to Barry Latman(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing 1
run. The loss was charged to Ryne Duren(0-1) in relief.

April 23

Roy Sievers smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Sam Jones racked up an
impressive total of 13 strikeouts at Memorial Stadium where the Baltimore
Orioles beat the New York AL Yankees 3 to 0.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Sievers.  He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning and hit a
bases-empty home run (his 8th of the season) in the 3rd inning.  The pitchers
took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again.

Jones(1-2) was credited with the shutout. Bob Turley(3-1) was tagged with the
loss.  Jones was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out
there.  The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates.  We got the
victory and I'll sure take 13 strikeouts anytime!'
