In one of the biggest trades in SMILEY history, Boston sent Reggie
Smith off to the Gateway city. Not only was he a fan favorite in Beantown, but he was one of the top players in the SMILEY
history. Reggie is in the top 21 in 11 offensive categories and is first or
second (to Carl Yastrzemski) in almost every Boston team
category. Reggie needs just 9 runs to have 500 in his career. He is the only
player in SMILEY history to drive in at least 94 runs every year. Reggie has
also been one of the top defensive outfielders, possessing a strong arm that
kept runners in check. Boston also sent 3
pitchers to the redbirds; Mike Curtis, who has been a big disappointment this
year after success in 72, Mike Garman and Lynn McGlothen.
In return, the Sox get young outfielder Arnold “Bake”
McBride and a heralded young pitcher named James Richard. Red Sox manager Michael Tomeo had this to say:“Reggie Smith has been
an integral part of this organization since day 1, and we really hate losing
him, but we felt at this point in time, it was in the best interest of the
organization to trade him. Mike Curtis has not continued developing the promise
he showed last season and he seemed to be digressing this year. Mike Garman and
Lynn McGlothen are going to be good someday but I don’t
think we can wait, seeing what has happened to Mr
Curtis. Besides, we are really pleased with the 2 guys we are getting from St. Louis. Mr McBride will give us speed that we normally don’t
have and he is a good contact hitter. We expect him to compete with some other
youngsters we have coming up in the near future. Mr’s Lynn and Rice, for
playing time. Those 3 along with Bernie Carbo
and Dwight Evans, who are already with the big league club, give us a solid
future. Also Rick Miller’s play this year has allowed us to give Reggie
some time off and we feel that he is even better defensively and has shown some
decent offense which made trading Reggie a lot easier. We felt the key to this
trade was this Richard kid. Our scouts have raved over him. He is very similar
to Nolan Ryan in that he is an overpowering pitcher, who should be nearly
unbeatable if he can get his pitches under control. We wish Reggie Smith the
best and hope he has continued success that will eventually land him in the
Hall of Fame.” The Red Sox have said that Roger Moret
will make the transition to starter permanently and Richard will take his spot
in the bullpen. McBride will probably head to the minors and be called up in September
when rosters expand. Gail Hopkins will take Smith’s spot on the roster. At a point when only 12 players have 500 career rbi’s, Reggie Smith teamed with Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli ( no wonder we traded him, his name was too easy to spell ! )
to give Boston 3 of those
players. There are 7 teams that don’t have a 400 rbi guy in their history yet. A list of Reggie Smith’s
career standings as of week 10 follows.
