Subject: Reds @ Cubs
It's hard to lose if you don't allow any hits (the Cubs had a TOTAL of seven for the first three games). The Reds' pitching in game four wasn't quite up to par in that respect.... Game 1: Don Wilson tossed a 2-hitter for 7 innings, and the Reds capitalized on some weak defense (5 unearned runs) although not on our other chances (10 LOB) in a 7-2 win. Stan Bahnsen was the victim of the bad D in the second inning, allowing 0 earned runs, but being chased off the mound anyway. Joe "Mendoza" Morgan inched closer to the .240 mark thanks to the 4 hits he collected, and Lou Piniella had 3 RBI. Game 2: Jack Billingham & Tom Hall combined on a 3-hitter, and Cincy won by the score of 3-0. Bert Blyleven pitched well (7 runners and 2 ER in 8 IP) but saw his record drop to 14-7 as his slump continues. Game 3: Don Gullett "scattered" (ha ha) one hit and the Reds duplicated yesterday's 3-0 win. For aficionados of Bill James' Game Scores, Gullett's had to be the best of 1973, and possibly the best ever: 9 1 0 0 1 11 (Game Score = 95). Catfish Hunter's perfect game in 1972 was a 91, and Jim McGlothlin's in 1970 (another Reds pitcher also facing the Cubs at the time) was a 94. Game 4: Cubs win 7-5 as the teams combine for 24 hits and 21 LOB in a wild affair. With Chicago ahead 2-1 in the sixth and Cincy starter Dick Woodson in trouble (first & third, nobody out), Dave Tomlin came in and struck out the side. Unfortunately, in between K's he found the time to allow a 3-run homer to Davey Johnson. That proved large, as the Reds came back with 3 runs of our own, but Pedro Borbon sealed the loss (that's his job, after all) by coughing up 4 straight singles to lead off the Cubbie eighth. Cincy brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the 9th, but Mac Scarce got Buddy Bell to line out to end the game. Ralph Garr, temporarily relegated to the sub-.400 range during the series, went 3 for 4 to keep the dream alive (now at .401). Alan |
