May 22 30,813 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field. The New York AL Yankees ended a long winless drought and topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. New York AL took the lead for good in the 5th inning scoring a single run. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. The win went to Bob Turley(9-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Ryne Duren earned his 11th save. The losing pitcher was Hoyt Wilhelm(3-2). 'Some losses are harder to take than others' Pittsburgh's manager lamented after the game. 'This was one of them.' New York AL threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally. Pizarro got help from Roy Face who was credited with his 11th save. Bobby Shantz(3-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. Pizarro was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'
