30,813 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field.  The New York AL Yankees
ended a long winless drought and topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

New York AL took the lead for good in the 5th inning scoring a single run.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

The win went to Bob Turley(9-1) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Ryne Duren
earned his 11th save.  The losing pitcher was Hoyt Wilhelm(3-2).

'Some losses are harder to take than others' Pittsburgh's manager lamented
after the game.  'This was one of them.'

Enos Slaughter had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the New York AL Yankeesdefeated
the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 to 2 at Forbes Field.

New York AL jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied
2 runs on 2 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Mickey Mantle who
deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he smashed a two-run homer (his
14th of the season).  New York AL had 16 hits for the night while Pittsburgh
had 8.

Bob Grim(6-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Vern
Law(2-9) was hit with the loss.  He gave up 8 hits and no walks in 5 and 2/3
innings.

Left fielder Bob Skinner had 2 base hits and Juan Pizarro whiffed 10 batters
as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York AL Yankees by a score of 3 to
2.

Pizarro(3-3) put on a good performance.  He allowed only 4 hits and 3 walks in
7 innings improving his ERA from 3.61 to 3.31.  New York AL threatened in the
9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

Pizarro got help from Roy Face who was credited with his 11th save.  Bobby
Shantz(3-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Pizarro was pleased with his performance.  He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches.  Just as important, my location was right on.  The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me.  Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'
