Subject: Reds @ Mets
"You gotta believe!" is the well-known rallying cry from Mets' reliever Tug McGraw, and with the Reds poised for our first-ever legitimate shot at winning the N.L. West pennant, Cincy fans DO believe! However, if any of those fans possess more than half a brain, what they should "believe" is that we're going to choke this damn thing away any minute...... Game 1: Jim Bibby is almost literally unhittable, walking 6 men but allowing 1 only cheap single (a blown x-play by John Milner) in seven innings, while the Mets took batting practice against Jack Billingham and Dick Woodson. Final score: 8-1. Number 8 hitter Tommy Helms had 3 hits and 3 RBI. The Reds were limited to 3 hits for the game, 2 of them due to Mets' defensive miscues. Game 2: It was the Reds turn to hold the Mets to a mere 3 hits, but it didn't alter the outcome, as a late choke became a 3-0 loss. Cleon Jones' 3-run blast in the 8th inning produced all the socring. Game 3: Tom Seaver turned a 1-0 first inning lead into an immediate 2-1 deficit, but the Reds rallied for a 5-spot in the second against old nemesis Steve Stone (after which neither team dented the scoreboard again), on the way to a 6-2 win. Along with Seaver, our other ex-Met (Jerry Grote) had a good day, collecting 3 hits and raising his batting average to .306. Game 4: Shades of 1968-1972! A dramatic Cincy comeback becomes a typical Cincy choke: Don Gullett was very hittable early and coughed up a pair of third-inning runs to the home team. Neither team would corss the plate again until the Reds' ninth when the "You Gotta Believe" guy committed an error to open the inning, and followed that by allowing game-tying extra-base hits to Pete Rose and Lou Piniella after fanning the two previous hitters. Reliever Jack Billingham got the first two outs easily in the New York 11th, but then went single, walk, homer (Cleon Jones again), sending the crowd home happy while the Visiting Chokers got to slink back home wondering how long it will be before they are welcomed to their customary Second Place for good.
