July 14

Mickey Mantle launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the mighty New York AL
Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 8 to 3 at Crosley
Field.

Mantle had a good evening at the plate.  He cracked a solo homerun in the 2nd
inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 28th of the season) in the
3rd inning and doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning.  New York AL
banged out 14 on the night.

The winning pitcher was Duke Maas(9-4) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. Bob
Purkey(11-10) was the losing pitcher.  He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 3
and 1/3 innings of work.

At Crosley Field, the Cincinnati fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Brooks Lawrence(5-9) finally bested his New York AL opposite, Vinegar Bend
Mizell(3-9), by the score of 1 to 0.

The winning run, and the only run, was scored by Cincinnati in the 2nd inning.
The early run support proved sufficient for Lawrence and Cincinnati.  That
was all the run support Lawrence required.  New York AL had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.

Dick Hyde earned his 21st save. Mizell took the loss.  He surrendered only 1
run and 2 hits in 6 innings.

Elston Howard hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the New York AL Yankees defeated
the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 10 to 6 at Crosley Field.

Howard was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day
at their team's expense.  He bombed a two-run dinger (his 5th of the season)
in the 1st inning, laced a base-knock knocking in a run in the 3rd inning and
tripled in the 5th inning.  New York AL had 11 hits overall, while Cincinnati
had 8.

Bob Turley(15-5) was the winner allowing 6 runs in 7 innings. Ryne Duren
gained credit for his 16th save.  Frank Sullivan(8-9) absorbed the loss.  New
York AL scored big getting 7 runs off him in 2 and 1/3 innings.
