July 17 Whitey Ford took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the strong New York AL Yankees topped the hopeless Washington Senators by a score of 5 to 1 at Griffith Stadium. Ford(12-8) looked very much in control throughout the night. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Ford chalked up 13 strikeouts. The left-handed Ford had his no-hit bid broken up by Billy Klaus who doubled with nobody out in the 6th inning. New York AL out-hit Washington for the game, 8 hits to 5. Ryne Duren earned his 18th save. Gary Bell(4-8) was the losing pitcher. Ford was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
