The Chargers take 3 of 4 from the Falcons as Dan Fouts finds Charlie Joiner open time and time again…. Game 1: Where to start in this one? How
about the end and then from the start. Final score SD 19 ATL 11. This
may be the highest overall scoring game in SMILEY history. 2-2 after an inning
(first 2 braves got 5-4 and 5-5 off Mike Caldwell) and
7-7 after 3 innings. 12 of the
13 padres that batted got hits, 10 scored runs, and 8
had rbis. Padres 1-4
hitters were 11-16 with 13 runs and 11 rbi’s.
How bad was it in the launching pad? Felix Millan hit
his first homer of the year since opening day. Padres scored at least 2 runs in
6 different innings. The Braves managed that feat on 3 occasions. Caldwell managed to
hang around for 6 innings for the win, finally settling down and retiring the
last 9 with the help of a dp
grounder. Clay Kirby got a save despite giving up 4 runs in 3 innings. Game 2: Much the same as game 1, at least for Atlanta. They
manage another 11 spot while holding the padres to only 5.
Aaron was 4-5 with 3 2b’s and a hr. Carl Morton went the distance and
also homered (one of 5 brave homers). Aaron, Billy
Williams and Nate Colbert all homered
for the 2nd straight game. The Padre bullpen continued its fine
work, 3 innings 4 runs and 3 homers. 2 game total, 6 innings 8 runs and 5 hrs. Game 3: Randy (I serve batting practice on the road) Jones
threw 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball (2 of the hits were 4-4 and 4-5) and
helped himself with a 2 singles which drove in 3 runs (missing a hr because of the w power). Orlando Pena came in to finish
up, but not before giving up a 3 run homer to ron santo in the 9th
to make the final 7-3. Game 4: Perry and Niekro in what
fans hoped would be a pitchers duel. And for once it was. Both were gone after
the 7th with the score tied at 1. SD scored a run in the top of the
9th to take the lead before Atlanta tied it
with 4 straight hits, 3 on their cards the 4th was one of only 3
on-base chances on McMahon’s card. Bases loaded and no outs, Mcmahon gets a force at home then a
5-2-3 dp to save the bullpen further embarrassment.
In the 10th after Millan made an out, 2 singles put
men on 2nd and 3rd. Colbert was intentionally walked
which brought up slugger Enzo Hernandez. Enzo managed a full count walk to force in a run then
McMahon singled in 2 for breathing room. Final SD 5-3. |
