BOXSCORE: 1973 Pittsburgh Pirates At 1973 Chicago NL Cubs 7/31/1973
The Pirate manager had a brain cramp in extra innings as the Cubs rallied for
a 7-5 win in game 3 of the series. The Pirates were in control 3-1 after 6.5
innings. Chicago stormed back in the 7th by scoring 3 runs. After loading
the bases, the Cubs made it 3-2 on a Dave Johnson double play ball. Bill
Sudakis then connected on a 2 run homer to give the Cubs the lead. Pittsburgh
regained the lead in the 9th when Al Oliver drove home 2 with a base hit.
Closer Dave Giusti entered and proceeded to blow his 7th save of the year.
Johnson led off the inning with a single-SB and moved to 3rd on a groundout.
Mike Epstein then doubled in Johnson to tie it up. Ralph Garr then singled,
but the 'speedy' Epstein was gunned out at the plate. With Garr on 2nd, up
stepped Rick Monday. I pitched to Monday with 1st open (and the pitcher on
deck) and he made me pay with a game winning 2 run homer.
