Subject: Reds @ Padres
The Reds scheduled & played our usual Sunday quadrupleheader, this one being against a Padres team that normally gives us a massive dose of heartburn, but Cincy hurlers held San Diego to 15 hits FOR THE SERIES (and Dick Woodson even started a game!). Reds fans are not going to see this kind of pitching again anytime soon after 1973, and we'll sure miss it. Game 1: The #9 hitters provided much of the offense in Don Gullett's 5-2 decision over Mike Caldwell. No sooner had the Reds taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth than Caldwell gave the Pads a 2-1 lead with a clutch single. Later, Cincy pinch hitters Luis Aparicio & Pat Corrales would both get RBIs from the 9 slot, and Buddy Bell and Tony Perez supplied solo homers. This was the only game in which the Reds bullpen was used (thankfully), Pedro Borbon & Bob Miller combining for 3 scoreless innings. Game 2: Tom Seaver had a perfect game broken up by John Lowenstein's pinch-single in the sixth, by which time Seaver's teammates had staked him to a 6-0 lead on the way to a 3-hitter & a 7-0 final. Buddy Bell homered again, and Earl Williams launched one of his own. Game 3: Randy Jones lasted only 3 innings (allowing 9 baserunners, but no home runs), and Don Wilson matched Seaver's 3-hitter in the 9-2 victory. Lou Piniella, playing every game of the series so far thanks to all the lefties the Reds were facing, collected 3 hits including a double, and drove home 3 runs. Game 4: Our old nemesis Gaylord Perry was not sharp today (16 hits allowed in 7.2 IP), but the Reds gave him every chance to get off the hook. At one point the hit totals were 12-3, yet the lead was one thin run. A couple of late runs provided some breathing room in the 5-2 final. Dick Woodson had his best outing as a Red despite immediately blowing a 2-0 lead (it took only 3 batters) in the first frame. Woodson went the distance on a 5-hitter and only walked 3 batters. The Reds went 18 for 18 on x-plays in the series, and hope we somehow saved just a smidgen of luck for our home series this week.... Alan |
