Subject: CIN-LAN game 1... doesn't get any better
The two starting pitchers (Hall & Sutton) combined for 3 walks and 20 K's. L.A. drew first blood in the fourth when Gary Matthews led off with a double. Garvey and Ferguson couldn't budge the runner, and when Maddox rolled his 2 column, it looked like Hall would escape - there's only one hit there and 11 outs (86% chance of an out). Of course Maddox rolled the hit: RBI single, 1-0. Next inning the score becomes 2-0 when reserve 2B Billy Grabarkewitz doubles and (of all people) pitcher Don Sutton homers off Hall's card. Sutton's W turns the homer into a single, but the damage is done as Grabarkewitz scores without a throw. Hall is doing fine otherwise, on his way to a 1 walk, 11 K performance. Meanwhile, the Cincy batters are not: they blow a first-and-third, nobody-out situation in the fourth (0 runs score), on their way to an 8-LOB performance as Sutton rolls onward. In the Cincy eighth, pinch-hitter (for Hall) Ken Griffey led off with a single, and two outs later still stood at first base. Joe Morgan rolled a walk on 1-7, narrowly missing the game-tying homer on 1-8. Tony Perez then beat Grabarkewitz on an x-play (x's helped the Reds to every run we got), Griffey scoring to make it a 2-1 game. Horacio Pina relieved Sutton and retired Buddy Bell to abort the comeback. Joe Niekro made his Cincy debut in the LA eighth, retiring the side in order. Ken Berry singled (on an x-play to Maddox) with one out in the Reds ninth, but Grant Jackson came on and got Aparicio to hit into a force play. With a lefty now on the mound, Lou Piniella grabbed a bat and hit for Niekro..... rolling a double and aggressively taking third as Berry beat the throw home!!! Pete Rose then proceeded to get an x-grounder past Bill Russell as Piniella trotted home with the winning run. Hold on - not so fast on that "winning run" stuff.... With the Reds manager showing remarkable confidence in unproven pitchers - Hall was not available, and Cincy's other veteran relievers suck big time when the game is on the line - Dick Baney came in and gave up a walk & a single after getting one out in the Dodger ninth, putting runners on the corners for pinch-hitter Dick Dietz. Baney got suddenly tough and fanned Dietz on his own card, but was lifted in favor of Bob Miller when Oscar Gamble was announced as the next batter. Miller got Gamble to hit an x-grounder at Tony Perez (which is hardly the recommended approach), but Perez managed to turn it into the final out after stumbling around quite a bit. Hopefully games 2-4 will be as much fun. Alan |
