Subject: just HAD to know....

...that those breaks the Reds got in game one would be our last of the series.  And damned if that ain't exactly how it went....

Game 2: Gary Matthews gave LA an immediate lead with a solo homer, but Tony Perez matched him just a few batters later.  LA got some amazing rolls & splits (a habit that would last for 2 more games) against Don Gullett in a 3-run fifth, and the final score was 5-1.  Al Downing threw 8 strong innings, combining with Grant Jackson on a 5-hitter.

Game 3: Seaver & Messersmith were tied at 1 in the sixth when old Cincy nemesis Willie Crawford (no, I didn't misspell 'McCovey') launched a two-run homer.  Joe Niekro was not quite as sharp in relief today as he was in game 1, turning a close 3-2 game into an out-of-reach 5-2 affair.

Game 4: A dramatic game that would have been the equal, fun-wise, of game 1 had the result been different.  Don Wilson was far from being at his best, but Ron Bryant was no better (a little worse in fact, but Bryant's the one with the 'W' next to his name today).

Tony Perez gave Cincy a 1-0 need on a gift triple from Oscar Gamble, but Gamble's clutch single tied the game right back up in the bottom of the first.  Then, Gamble's triple was the key to LA's 2-run third.  This time it was the Reds turn for the immediate comeback, with 2 runs in the top of the fourth.  Once more the Dodgers scored, and the Reds returned the favor: Joe Ferguson homered in the LA fifth, and Buddy Bell stroked a game-tying RBI single in the Cincy sixth.

The Reds blew an opportunity in the seventh when Pete Rose 'beat' the 5-to-1 odds against missing the pitch on a hit & run attempt, hanging poor Don Wilson out to dry.  Cincy would have had second & third, nobody out (after Rose's single and Ferguson's passed ball) but for that well-timed miscue.

Following that demonstration, we then learned the lesson that, in Cincinnati, young pitchers can choke just as well as old ones.

Wilson left after 8 innings of work in favor of Dick Baney, who retired Garry Maddox leading off the LA ninth, then allowed a single (& SB) to Davey Lopes, which was followed by our old buddy Willie Crawford taking one downtown to end the game and the series.  We can only hope that the home team fares as well when we host the Dodgers in the final homestand of 1973.

Alan
