Subject: Montreal at Chicago Week 20
Montreal's ragtag outfit traveled to Chicago in the very unusual position of contending. The Cubs always play the Expos tough and it was with some trepidation that we took the field in Wrigley: Game 1 Just what the doctor ordered!!! Third baseman Bob Bailey had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Steve Renko carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Wrigley Field as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs 6 to 0. Renko(20-8) was on top of his game. He gave up just 1 hit and 5 walks in 9 innings. The right-handed Renko had his no-hit bid broken up by Mike Epstein who doubled with two outs in the 7th inning. Montreal had a total of 9 hits for the game. Stan Bahnsen(9-15) was given the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. 'He came out with good stuff,' Steve Bivens said about Renko. 'Just what we needed to show this young team that we CAN win.' Game 2 What Renko could do, Harrison could NOT duplicate!!! Bert Blyleven(19-9), with relief help from Vicente Romo, shutout Montreal while the Chicago NL Cubs scored 6 runs in a day game at Wrigley Field. Montreal fell behind quickly as the Chicago NL offense came through in the first inning with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Ralph Garr kicked off the action when he doubled. Rick Monday came to the plate and doubled which scored a run. After an out was recorded, Davey Johnson stepped up to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 28th of the season). That early run support was enough for Blyleven and Chicago NL. Chicago NL finished with 11 hits while Montreal ended up with 8. Roric Harrison(9-15) absorbed the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. With this win, Chicago NL has a 64-76 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss Montreal now has a record of 73-71. Game 3 Expos bounce back from Game 2 shutout with 5 first inning runs!!! At Wrigley Field the Chicago NL Cubs were battered 11 to 4 by the Montreal Expos. The game started off with Montreal taking the lead in the first as they scored 5 runs on 3 base hits. That was all the runs Balor Moore(10-11) needed. Montreal had 15 hits overall, while Chicago NL had 8. Moore was helped out by Mike Marshall who recorded his 41st save. The loss was charged to Bill Bonham(6-11). He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered 3 hits and 3 walks. Game 4 Gene Garber was three outs away from a 3-0 shutout victory when Ken Singleton led off the ninth inning with a single. HAL rushed out to the mound and brought in reliever Mac Scarce to face Bob Bailey. Apparently HAL thought Garber was too much of a risk despite Scarce having to face a tough right-hand hitter in Bailey. Scarce pitched Bailey very carefully and walked him. Manager Bivens then brought in Frank Howard to hit for centerfielder Jim Holt. Hondo got the pitch he was looking for and launched a three-run homer to tie the game. Scarce then got the next three hitters in-a-row to end the top of the ninth. Iron Mike Marshall pitched four scoreless innings to keep the Expos in it. Montreal finally pushed across a run in the top of the twelfth. Mike Jorgensen drew a leadoff walk, but was thrown out stealing by Bill Sudakis. Jesus Alou was the next batter and he struck out. Ron Fairly then reached second on a two-base error by Rick Monday. Ken Singleton came up and he was walked intentionally. Bob Bailey stepped into the box and slapped a single scoring the run. Rookie Frank Tanana then came on to face the top of the Cub lineup in the bottom of the twelfth. He was up to the task as he set down the cubs one-two-three. Mike Marshall(7-4) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 4 innings. Frank Tanana who was credited with his 1st save. The loss was charged to Bill Bonham(6-12) in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 inning of work. |
