august 14 Duke Maas carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Bill Skowron hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the very talented New York AL Yankees outscored the Kansas City A's 6 to 0. Maas(12-7) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He gave up just 2 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings lowering his ERA from 4.02 to 3.81. The right-handed Maas lost his no-hit bid when Don Blasingame singled with one out in the 6th inning. Kansas City was out-hit by New York AL, 11 hits to 2. Jack Sanford(7-8) took the loss. New York AL scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 and 2/3 innings. After an out was recorded, R C Stevens started the scoring when he delivered a solo blast (his 6th of the season). After another out, Vic Power came up and he reached on an error. Cerv then cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 45th of the season). New York AL had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Walt Craddock(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and allowing no runs. Glen Hobbie recorded his 1st save. Whitey Ford(15-9) suffered the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 8 innings of work. New York AL drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. Norm Siebern hit a single. Siebern took his lead and swiped second. Two outs later Mickey Mantle stepped up to the plate and he banged out a single scoring the run. New York AL ended up with 14 hits for the game while Kansas City had 10. Vinegar Bend Mizell(9-9) went 6 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Mizell got help from Ryne Duren who earned his 21st save. Wally Burnette(0-1) was hit with the loss.
