Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

Having clinched the 1958 N.L. pennant before taking the field, the Chicago Cubs completed our road season with an anticlimactic split in St. Louis, keeping our road record below .500.  MVP wannabe Ernie Banks had a particularly brutal series, going 1 for 16 and blowing the first 3 x-chances hit his way, before finally at least getting his glove to work occasionally, if not his bat.

It was a bad series to be a baserunner, with numerous victims being gunned at the plate or on SB attempts; meanwhile, CHN pitcher Cal McLish successfully stole a base, a task he is apparently better suited for than pitching....

Game 1: SLN had 4 doubles and a triple among their 7 hits, but Gary Geiger's first HR of 1958 in the 9th inning off of Sal Maglie gave the visitors a narrow 3-2 win.  Marcelino Solis made his MLB debut on the mound for the Cubs and contributed 5 effective innings; Hal Jeffcoat tossed 4 scoreless ones to earn the relief victory, his first W in a CHN uniform in his 25th appearance.

Game 2: The Cubs proved unable to leave the 1958 regular season without at least one more 9th-inning choke.  Charlie Neal blew 2 x-plays in the frame, turning our 2-1 lead into an unearned 3-2 defeat and robbing McLish (who actually pitched well) of a deserved victory.

Game 3: CHN managed no offense today at all (4 hits), the defense donated 4 more unearned runs to our opponent and the end result was a 6-1 rout.  Camilo Pascual's disappointing season ends with an 8-12 record and although he pitched poorly again today (5 IP, 9 baserunners) none of the 4 runs he permitted will increase his ERA.

Game 4: Turning on some power one last time, Gus Bell hit a G.S. and Walt Moryn added a 3-run shot as the Cubs opened up an early 8-1 lead that became an 11-3 final.  Dick Donovan tossed 5 effective frames for his 18th win of the season, and a bevy of relievers took it from there.
