july 21 In a close game it was the New York AL Yankees 5, the St. Louis Cardinals 3 at Busch Stadium. Fritz Peterson(5-7) had a steady outing. He went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 2 walks. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Dooley Womack gained credit for his 14th save. Steve Carlton(10-4) was hit with the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings. With this win, New York AL has a 39-69 record. They have been 6-4 lately. St. Louis will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run - and not a start of a new trend.
