With KC needing a sweep to be involved in the 3 team playoff they take game 1 6-5. With a 4-2 lead in the 8th KC brings in Doug Bird to save it who promptly gives up a 3 run bomb to Mickey Stanley. KC isn't done though as they get to Joe Coleman for 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead. Steve Mingori and Tom Griffin combine to pitch the 9th and preserve the win something Bird couldn't do. Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. Frank White led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. White was safe on a stolen base. Del Unser then slapped a single bringing in a run. Kansas City continued their aggressive style with another stolen base. Baker stepped into the box and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Amos Otis kept the inning going and laced a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Kansas City had 15 hits for the game and Detroit had 12. Doug Bird(6-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and allowing 1 run. Tom Griffin earned the save, his 1st. Joe Coleman(12-14) took the loss. He was unable to control the Kansas City offense and allowed 15 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. 'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Coleman said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
