Subject: 1958 World Series, game one
In a series being played @ league HQ by mutual agreement, the New York Yankees eked out a narrow 3-2 victory in game one of the 1958 World Series. All 3 NYA runs scored in the first inning on one swing of the bat, while the Cubs blew countless opportunities, not scoring at all until there were 2 outs in the 9th and nobody on base. The Cubs outhit New York 11-6 for the day but two critical infield plays decided the contest: one play was made, one was not. -------------------------------------------- CHN starter Dick Donovan fanned Norm Siebern to open the ballgame, but then walked Gil McDougald and allowed a blown-x single by second baseman Charlie Neal. Up stepped Leon Wagner and a few seconds later the ball disappeared over the fence and the Yankees had a 3-0 lead and, as it turned out, the ballgame. The Cubs notched 3 singles against NYA starter Bob Turley in our half of the first, but scored zero runs when Al Dark was gunned down at the plate. Donovan walked 2 more Yankees in the third, but escaped further damage. Charlie Neal walked to open the CHN 5th and was immediately wild pitched into scoring position, but 3 outs later had never budged from that spot. With Don Elston now on the mound for Chicago, the Yankees mustered another pair of walks in their 7th, but McDougald flew out to end that threat. In the CHN 7th, the first 2 batters reached base but Walt Moryn was erased trying to go to third on Gus Bell's single to right on another high-digit split card. Don McMahon allowed 2 NYA singles in the 9th but fanned Siebern to keep the score 3-0. Bob Grim earned the save in game 1 by tossing 2.2 innings in relief of Turley and Bobby Shantz, but not before the Cubs finally woke up in the 9th. Dale Long opened that frame with a base hit, but Smokey Burgess immediately rapped into a critical rally (and game) killing DP. That was naturally followed by a (now solo) homer off the bat of Walt Moryn; Gus Bell then doubled and was plated by Neal's single. Grim was able to retire pinch hitter Harry Chiti on a fly ball to end the game. More games to follow later this morning.... Alan |
