If you have to lose, make it memorable. At least that's our motto.... :-) Alan ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, September 04, 2008 10:24 AM Subject: Re: [PreSmiley] 1958 Workd Series, game three
Cubs fans everywhere are still cheering that effort! The lovable losers.

In game 3, the fans at Yankee Stadium witnessed one of the greatest chokes in the history of postseason play. There is no need to ask which team pulled it off.... ------------ --------- --------- --------- -------- CHN's Bob Rush was opposed on the mound by part-time Yankee starter Don Larsen. The day of rest for travel seemed to greatly rejuvenate the Cubs early in the game. Larsen plunked Alvin Dark with a fastball to open the day's events, and Dark eventually scored - giving the Cubs our first lead of the entire series - 2 outs later on a bases-loaded single by Walt Moryn. Only the one run scored because Dale Long was gunned at the plate (remember that later). Dark delivered an RBI single in the CHN second to make the score 2-0, and pitcher Bob Rush's 2-out bases-loaded single - his second hit of the day already - plated another run. A little deja vu: only the one run scored because Gus Bell was gunned at the plate (remember that later). Yogi Berra's ballpark-aided solo home run in the NYA 5th was the only blemish on Rush's near-perfect day. He went into the final inning having allowed just 4 hits, 1 walk, and had fanned 9 Yankee batters. Larsen's day came to an ignominious end after 6.1 innings during which the Cubs had reached base 17 times (10 hits, 7 walks). The Cubs tacked on what would surely be an unnecessary insurance run in the 9th when Charlie Neal tripled home defensive sub Gary Geiger. Rush came to plate with a chance to add to his 4-0 lead and hit the ball hard again - but right at Tony Kubek, who doubled Neal off of third base. Surely that wouldn't matter, nor would the 14 runners who the Cubs stranded today - 7 of them in scoring position. ------------ --------- --------- --------- -------- Given the Cubs' history, trouble was naturally expected in the NYA 9th and the bullpen was warming up at full intensity. Norm Siebern led off with a single and advanced 90 feet on Gil McDougald's base hit. Mantle rapped a grounder to third base and Alvin Dark, not having the good fortune to be rated a 4e65, booted it: e5. Bases loaded, nobody out. Ted Bowsfield was summoned to face lefty batter Leon Wagner. Six pitches later, Wagner had a free pass to first base and the score was 4-2. Bases loaded, nobody out. Elston Howard stepped to the plate and Don McMahon took the mound to face him. Elston just got a piece of the ball, rolling it towards McMahon - who flubbed it: e1. 4-3 score. Bases loaded, nobody out. Up comes Yogi Berra. Everyone advances one base on his single. Tie game. Bases loaded, nobody out. McMahon hits the showers, only a few seconds before the rest of his team. Don Elston takes the mound to face the Moose, whose bloop single on a fb(B) over the heads of the drawn-in outfielders makes it a 5-4 final. And the bases are still loaded and still nobody is out.
