A 3-1 lead in the late innings is erased by a 3-run comeback but the usual roles are reversed!  Unbelievably, the teams will be returning to Chicago for game six....

---------------------------------

Two fresh starting pitchers, Camilo Pascual and Wilmer Mizell, made their Series debuts today and (similar to a prior Series game) the one who pitched far better wound up with nothing to show for it.

An error by the NYA third baseman on the first batter of the game led to an unearned run when Ernie Banks broke out of his massive slump by delivering an RBI single.  That 1-0 lead was soon erased, and then some.

An error by the CHN third baseman led to an unearned run when it was followed by Norm Siebern's homer in the third inning.  Yogi Berra tripled and scored in the NYA 4th, giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead and prompting Pascual's departure from the game.

Cal McLish delivered a pair of very effective middle relief innings (!) but Vinegar Bend proved even tougher for the Chicago batsmen.  His day would end after 7 innings of 2-hit ball; he walked 3 and allowed no earned runs.  The Cubs couldn't manage to strand even one runner in scoring position with Mizell on the hill.

CHN reliever Ted Bowsfield escaped a mini-jam in the NYA 7th and left for a pinch-hitter with the score still 3-1 against his team; he was undoubtedly not thinking that he'd wind up with a win today, but then a very funny thing happened....

-----------------------------------

Ryne Duren accompanied a couple of NYA's defensive replacements onto the field for the top of the 8th.  But neither of those replacements took the third base position, a factor that would soon become pivotal.

The CHN 8th quickly began to resemble the ill-fated NYA 9th from game 3, right down to the positions that coughed up the critical errors.

Duren's first batter tapped a grounder back to him - that he dropped.  Pinch-hitter Vada Pinson's single put 2 runners aboard with nobody out, and Duren then walked Lee Walls to load the bases and Ernie Banks to force in a run.   Bases loaded, nobody out.

Moose Skowron's misplay of Dale Long's grounder tied the game, and left the bases still loaded and still nobody out.

Duren then suddenly got tough, coercing the dice into finding his stellar 5 column.  He fanned Walt Moryn on 3 pitches, but then gave up what proved to be the game-winning RBI on Charlie Neal's sac fly, then he fanned Gus Bell on 3 pitches to end the fiasco.

Don Elston replaced Bowsfield on the mound for Chicago and gave up a triple to the first batter he faced - exactly as he did in game 2.  But then another very funny thing happened, as Elston morphed temporarily into Ryne Duren.  CHN's Elston punched out NYA's Elston on 3 pitches, then got two infield grounders to end the inning - stranding the tying run at third!

A 2-out walk in the NYA 9th failed to spell disaster for the Cubs as Elston nailed down the surprising 4-3 victory with another 3-pitch strikeout.

Game 6 will take place later today.

Alan
