Subject: 1958 World Series, game 6
A classic contest in which both teams played as if there were no tomorrow - and they were right.... ------------------------------------------ Whitey Ford and Jim Brosnan reprised their matchup from game 2, but they didn't quite match their previous efforts. Gil McDougald walked in the NYA 1st and was brought home by Series MVP Leon Wagner's gopher ball, the only hit Brosnan would allow today in his brief stint (though not as brief as Whitey's). Aside from Brosnan's one fatal pitch, both starters had everything going their way until the Cubs came to bat in the 4th. With 2 outs and runners on 1st & 2nd, Charlie Neal delivered an RBI single and Gus Bell's base hit loaded the bases with Brosnan due up. Sacrificing an effective pitcher for a small chance at some offensive productivity, the move paid off when pinch hitter Ted Lepcio worked Ford for an RBI walk, tying the game, and when Tony Kubek booted Harry Chiti's grounder the Cubs took what would be our final lead of the Series. Bob Grim retired Bobby Adams to end the Cubs scoring for 1958. Chicago picked a bad time to accomplish the rare feat of allowing an unearned run without committing an error, that run scoring on a weak groundout and tying the game 3-3 in the NYA 8th against reliever Ed Mayer. With 2 on and 2 outs in the Cubs half of the inning, Art Ditmar came on to retire pinch hitter Alvin Dark to eliminate CHN's final threat. The Yankees got runners on the corners with just one out in the 9th, but Don McMahon kept the next two hitters in the infield and the game eventually went to extra innings when the Cubs went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th. Ditmar singled to open the 10th and was bunted to second, but Siebern & McDougald failed to bring him home. With 2 outs and nobody on in the NYA 11th, Elston Howard's home run gave the Yankees the lead and the Series. Ryne Duren stayed on the bench today as Ditmar completed his brilliant relief performance by inducing a game-ending GIDP after Bill White had committed an error. NYA outhit the Cubs 7-6 as both teams got excellent pitching in Game 6; in typical fashion, the Cubs managed a tremendous 'advantage' in the LOB department (11-5 today and *56-35* for the Series). Congrats to the Yankees on their well-deserved Series victory; the Cubs will be looking for a (rather unlikely) third try at the Bronx Bombers in 1957. :-) Alan |
