Subject: ALCS game 1
(The ALCS is being played at league HQ by owner request; game 2 is tonight.) The Oakland A's took game 1 at Baltimore by the score of 9-5, and it could have been a much worse beating - the A's had the bases loaded in four consecutive innings and wound up stranding a total of 14 runners. The Orioles opened the scoring when Boog Powell homered against Catfish Hunter leading off the second inning. But A.L. Cy Young winner Jim Palmer's wildness would lead to damage in the Oakland fourth: Game 163 hero Gene Tenace led off with a walk and scored on Reggie Jackson's home run, and Sal Bando then drew a free pass and would eventually score on Dick Green's clutch single, making the score 3-1. After permitting a double and another walk opening the fifth, Palmer was lifted in favor of Don Hood, who fared no batter than Palmer. Hood gave up back to back singles, then wild pitched home the second run of the frame. Oakland loaded them up again in the sixth, but Roger Nelson got Sal Bando to hit into a DP and held the A's to just one run that inning. But in the seventh, three more walks (Oakland drew TWELVE of them in the game) and a single made the score 7-1. At that point, Baltimore finally began to fight back: Paul Blair's triple was followed by Carlos May's home run which cut the lead to 7-3, however Eddie Watt contributed a hit batsman and a walk to Oakland's cause in the eighth, and Bert Campaneris delivered two more runs with a base hit. Catfish Hunter retired for the day, and Wayne Granger took his place to open the Baltimore eighth. Four batters later Granger left the mound, having retired no one. Two runs scored in the inning, but Carlos May's GIDP against Rollie Fingers came at an opportune moment for Oakland, and that was all the scoring as both teams gave the scoreboard a rest in the ninth. Game two is slated to be a matchup of lefthanders, as Ken Holtzman (19-17) will oppose Dave McNally (18-10). |
