At Griffith Stadium the New York AL Yankees ended a long winless drought and
outscored the Washington Senators 6 to 3.

New York AL came up with 2 runs in the 2nd inning.  The crucial at-bat was
provided by Bobby Richardson who silenced the crowd when he lashed a single
scoring two baserunners.  New York AL had 16 hits for the game and Washington
had 8.

The winning pitcher was Bobby Shantz(1-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.
Shantz got help from Bob Grim who was credited with his 6th save.  Chuck
Stobbs(0-4) was the loser.  He gave up 5 runs in 4 innings of work.

'It felt really nice to get this win,' Shantz said. 'I kind of dictated the
game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'

Elston Howard had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the New York AL Yankees beatthe
Washington Senators in 15 innings by a score of 8 to 5.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings.  New York AL won the
hard fought contest in the 15th inning.  Gil McDougald led off the inning for
New York AL when he drew a walk.  Bobby Richardson followed and he laid down
a sacrifice bunt.  Mickey Mantle then was walked intentionally.  Jerry
Coleman came up and he slapped a one-base hit resulting in a run.  Coleman
took second on the throw.  Joe Collins came to the plate and would hit into a
fielders choice plating another run.  Tommy Byrne got his turn next, but he
was a strikeout victim.  Howard stepped up next and he ripped a base-knock
scoring the final run of the inning.  New York AL out-hit Washington for the
game, 17 hits to 10.

Byrne(2-0) went 4 innings allowing no runs for the win. Chuck Stobbs(0-5) was
tagged with the loss in relief.  New York AL scored big getting 3 runs off
him in 2 innings.
