May 11 Catcher Yogi Berra blasted a homerun as the New York AL Yankees outscored the Baltimore Orioles 4 to 3. New York AL scored 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Mickey Mantle who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 9th of the season). Baltimore had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. The victory was credited to Hoyt Wilhelm(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Art Ditmar recorded the save, his 3rd. Connie Johnson(1-5) was charged with the loss. 'This was a tough loss,' said Baltimore's manager, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.' Baltimore fell behind quickly as the New York AL offense came through in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Billy Consolo laced a one-base hit. Tony Kubek followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Mantle then stroked a base-hit scoring the run. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning. Larsen(2-0) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Bill Fischer(0-6) suffered the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 4 runs in 3 innings.
