july 28 Jake Gibbs had 2 base hits and Sam McDowell pitched 9 strong innings at Comiskey Park as the New York AL Yankees beat the Chicago AL White Sox 3 to 0. McDowell(6-9) was tremendous on the mound for New York AL. He surrendered only 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.88 to 3.68. Chicago AL went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th. Joel Horlen(11-13) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 walks. Chicago AL came up with 2 runs in the 7th inning. John O'Donoghue(8-4) got relief help from Hoyt Wilhelm who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 16th save. Al Downing(6-13) was tagged with the loss. With this win, Chicago AL has a 59-56 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, New York AL is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 40-75, worst in the division. New York AL took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. Mickey Mantle led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Tom Tresh was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Joe Pepitone then delivered a single scoring a run. Pepitone took second on the throw. Ruben Amaro came up and he delivered a one-base hit, and an error was also committed, plating another run. Whitaker stepped into the box and banged out a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. New York AL had a total of 12 hits for the game. Fritz Peterson(6-7) went 6 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Peterson got help from Joe Verbanic who earned his 3rd save.
