Gentlemen,

This is interesting. I assumed all managers used the scheduled stater
function.

I wonder then why we give the home teams five days off and not the visiting
teams? What is this accomplishing?

I assumed (I know, there's that word again) that this allowed the home
teams an advantage, because the visiting team had to be mindful of starters
or relievers who might be fatigued. Now that I think about it, I don't
recall if this is the actual case or not.

I do know that I always treated the scheduled games as if they were played
consecutively...meaning I made sure starters had 3 or 4 games off between
starts regardless of what series was being played or how the starts
overlapped from series to series.

I admit that I did this on my own and that there are no "rules" govenoring
it. I would be in support of adhering to a starter schedule if so proposed.

My two cents,

Steve Bivens

Alan,

My comment in regard to unrealistic usage by SP was not in the total # of
starts in a season but in a pitcher being able to possibly start back to
back scheduled games (last game in one series and the first game in the
next series). That just doesn't happen.

In regards to enforcing it, it's enforceable as much as any other basic
rule that a league member abides by. If a league prevents a player from
playing out of position then a manager knows not to play the guy out of
position. If the guy breaks the rules the league might catch it or they
might not. But you have to hope everyone is abiding by the rules of the
league. The same with SP that must rest 3 or 4 days. When the manager
creates his Manager file he inputs the pitchers that are starting for both
road and home games with the proper amount of rest (taking into account the
previous weeks start schedule). If you really want to monitor it you can
check everyones CM and then match it to the boxscores but I wouldn't think
that is needed.

Tom in the 20thCBRL created that days off schedule prior to Strat changing
the CM so you could enter a rotation. Before you only has the Starter # 1,
# 2 # 3, etc...

By giving the complete rest to teams before a series you clear all starters
to start but the rotation should have been set up so no one starts before
their allotted day.

The same concept as what most leagues used to do before we even had CM's to
make as people wrote out instructions for their opponent. The rotation was
still set up with the proper rest for the SP.

Scott

<<Scott,

1. We already limit total GS by pitchers, hence there is no "unrealistic
usage" overall, and
2. I see no effective way to enforce it.

There had been some recent discussion in the 20thCBRL about pitchers rest:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SOM20th/message/15987

...and I do see what Rich is talking about as a problem (and the solution
is very simple); I adopted the "road team gets rest only" approach simply
because that was how Tom did it, therefore it must work. Would giving both
teams 5 days off address what you are talking about here? Perhaps not
address it precisely, but would it help? I see very little than can be
done beyond that.

Alan

Hi Guys

I recently discovered that Smiley does not require starters to rest the
normal # of days (either 3 or 4) between starts other then in the series
you are playing. In other words, a starter can pitch in Game 4 of one
series and Game 1 of the next series (in other words back to back days). To
me this is very unrealistic and gives the manager playing the games an
advantage by being able to match up his pitchers how he sees fit, with no
bearing on when the pitcher is pitching the following series.

I was a little surprised as the change in Strat several years ago so we
could slot starters for each game in a series seemed to have given Strat
players the ability to make sure pitchers rested the proper amount of
games. In all other leagues I am in that use the scheduled games feature (4
leagues) pitchers must rest the appropriate amount of games as defined by
the schedule (either 3 or 4 depending if an *). All these leagues reset the
rest before each interval but teams must set the rotation with the proper
rest given to each starter.

I hope we adopt this as well to prevent unrealistic usage of Starting
Pitchers.

Scott
